Losing Pump Flow

by Tammy
(MA)

We have an above ground 24' round with a DE filter. We can get the pump going great, then within an hour there is almost no flow coming out.

If we turn off the pump, regenerate the filter and turn back on, the flow is back for a short time.

We actually just bought a new pump and filter thinking that was the problem, and the same thing is happening. Please help!!!

Hi Tammy.

A problem like this can sometimes require some communication back and forth to get it resolved. Feel free to use my contact form if this does not help.

My first guess would be an air leak on the suction side of the pump. Most often it is the hair and lint pot not sealing correctly. If the pot fills with air the system will not run correctly. It could be a leak in the hose from the pot to the skimmer also. Suction leaks can be found by turning the pump off and checking everything very closely for water appearing where it should not be. Not enough water in the pool could cause the same affect by drawing air into the system thru the skimmer.

Be very sure the skimmer basket and the hair and lint pot basket are both clean. The last thing to check would be the filter elements. After cleaning the filter elements you should see a big difference in return water pressure. If after a couple of hours of running the elements are dirty the water pressure will slow down and need cleaning again. If that is the problem you should have your water checked and maybe add shock treatment or algaecide.

Another possibility that comes to mind is the hose of an automatic pool cleaner collapsing. It has happened to me before and it will definitely cut your water flow down quickly.

Hope some this helps.

I have the same problem. Did Tammy get her problem resolved? If so how?

Thanks

Hi. I can't answer that Bryan, but check all the things listed above and I hope you get it fixed.

Sand ?
by: Anonymous

I seem to be having the same problem.

I used Playground sand, not pool sand ... it seems to be finer granules.

Could that be the problem ?

Hi. It could be the problem, I would switch to a filter sand.

Pump Flow Solution

If these things don't work try cleaning your DE filter "fingers" with one gallon of muratic acid mixed with 4-5 gallons of water. Soak in a 5 gallon bucket over night. This should improve your flow.

Great Idea Cleaning or replacing the elements can make a big difference.
