AGP Pool Base Help

by Erik Pogue
(Cabot Arkansas)

We bought a 24ft above ground pool and I was planning on using sand. However, when I opened the instructions it specifically says that if I use sand for the cove it will void my warranty. I am considering all the options including pool-krete, styrofoam, and Gladdon Perfect Bottom.

I live in Arkansas and have thick clay soil and there is some nut grass around so I am concerned about that. Any advice on what the best way to go would be appreciated. I don't want to overspend but want the pool to last.

Thanks!

Hi Erik.

The preformed pool cove is not a bad idea but I still prefer sand. For most of my installations I use a sand base and a sand cove. The nut grass could cause problems so be sure to treat it properly so it will not grow back up through your liner.

I'm afraid of the sand right now because I have a 25 yr warranty with 10 yrs on the liner and don't want to void that. I noticed you recommend styrofoam if you don't use sand but will that block nut grass? Or do I need to treat the ground/use a liner like gorilla pad. Also with stryofoam is it soft enough that the ladder can puncture the liner? Thanks for all the advice!

Erik

Hi Erik. I would still treat the ground and use a pad under the foam. Nut grass can grow through anything. The ladder should be fine, one of the ladder pads is a good idea however. They add just a little more protection.

Thanks for the advice. i think I'm going to level the ground and spread a very thin layer of sand to fill in any small depressions. Then use a Perfect bottom pad to prevent the Nut Grass and top it with 1" foam insulation and use preformed cove. Probably a little overkill but I want it to last. Thanks so much for all the help!

That all sounds good to me. Best of luck.
